SPANISH  INSTITUTIONS
A democracy means that all citizens are equal and have the same rights and obligations.
The Spanish Constitution is the most important law. It was written and approved in 1978.

Government and elections
The Government runs the country and serves the people.
A political party is a group of citizens with similar ideas about how to govern the country.

Elections are the act by which citizens over 18 years old can vote to choose their representatives.
  • General elections: we choose the President.
  • Autonomous elections: we choose the representatives of the Autonomous Community.
  • Municipal elections: we choose the local council to work in the Town Hall.
MUNICIPALITIES
A municipality is the smallest administrative division in Spain. It consists of:
  • One or more cities, towns or villages.
  • It is governed by a local council.
  • The mayor is the head of the local council. The councillors help the mayor and all of them work in the Town Hall.

Municipal services are those which benefit everyone who lives in a municipality:

MIDDLE  AGES
  • beginning: fall of the Roman Empire
  • end: discovery of America

We are going to focus on medieval times in the Iberian Peninsula.
  • first we were conquered by Muslims who stayed in the Iberian Peninsula for 800 years
  • later, the Christian Kingdoms wanted to recover these territories and started fighting against the Muslims.
  • at the end, the Iberian Peninsula was Christian and the kingdoms started to be more or less as they are today.

Life in medieval ages focused on a castle.
  • Noblemen lived inside the castle, they were rich, owned the land and fight for new territories.
  • Peasants lived in huts outside the castle, they were poor and worked the land of the noblemen. They had to pay taxes.
