MUSCLES AND MOVEMENT
A muscle is an organ that contracts to produce movement.
Our body has got many different muscles. There are two types:
  • Muscles that are joined to bones by tendons. Together, these muscles form our musculature, which is responsible for movement. We can feel them tighten or harden under our skin when they contract.
  • Muscles that are not joined to bones. These muscles produce different types of movement. For example, our heart muscles pump blood.

BONES AND SKELETON
Our skeleton is a framework of hard rigid pieces called bones. The bones of our skeleton are held together by connections called joints.
  • The skeleton consists of 206 bones of various types:
    • Long bones, like the femur.
    • Flat bones, like the scapula.
    • Short bones, like the vertebrae.
  • The groups of bones.
    • The vertebrae are a group of small bones that form the spine. The spine supports the whole skeleton.
    • The group of flatbones that form the skull protect your brain.
    • The rib cage protects the organs in the trunk.
  • The joints. There are two types.
    • Some joints allow the bones to move, like the elbow.
    • Others don’t allow the bones to move, like those in the skull.
